Who Is Kristian Day?
Kristian Day is a documentary filmmaker, photographer, and noise artist. Kristian attended the Music Industry Studies program University of Colorado at Denver from 2004 – 2008. His interest in music and art came from listening to avant garde artists such as Brian Eno, Boyd Rice, & Merzbow. He built microphones out of radio parts and modified electronic children’s toys in order to create atmospheric/anxiety driven recordings.
In 2006, he began recording soundtracks for films such as 100 Tears (2007), Am I Evil (2007), and Ron Atkins’ Mutilation Mile (2009). Day also began releasing his own albums on various bedroom/indie labels including Deterrent Industries & Dictafawn.
By 2007 Kristian discovered the films of Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage, and Ingmar Bergman which ignited his interest in filmmaking. He began directing and producing his own movies. His short films have played in festivals all over the world including Austria, Greece, and Italy. His films have also been screened at various festivals in cities across the United States including Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. His short films lacked characters but excelled in visuals. Many were shot with little or no actors and focused heavily on atmosphere and emotional reaction to the visuals.
In 2010 Kristian directed and shot his first feature length documentary called Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer which was the first film in his Made in Iowa documentary series. This was followed by Capone’s Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye which had a mild 43 theater release in midwest. Capone’s Whiskey gave birth to a made-for-tv documentary called Templeton Rye: Iowa’s Good Stuff which aired on Iowa Public Television alongside Ken Burns’ Prohibition series.
In 2014, Kristian published his first photography book TWO COLD WEEKS: THE MAKING OF UP ON THE WOOFTOP. A collection of behind the scenes photographs take by Kristian while he was producing the independent family film Up On the Wooftop.
Currently, Kristian works as a freelance producer/coordinator working on many independent films and national television shows as well as self-producing his own projects. He releases is avant garde music on handmade formats that can all be found at kristianday.bandcamp.com.
